This is so exciting!!! I have been trying to figure out for a few months how Clarington can appreciate what we have and the visitors see too! With my photography I want to bring that and this network has such a mission to help do that. Very exciting!!!! Looking forward to the future with Art of Transition.

Congratulations, Marissa! Wonderful to see your artwork getting the accolades it deserves. You're a great source of inspiration in that you are so committed to the pursuit of your painting and creativity. "Lets Jam" has such a vibrant feeling to it. I love the way the composition makes the eye dance around the canvas. Interesting that you found inspiration in music as the theme for this piece. Transitions exist in music just as they do in our day-to-day lives. One slight half-tone change can completely alter the feeling and/or the mood. Similarly, moving things around a space or adding colour can alter the emphasis and transform the way it makes you feel. There are opportunities every day to better ourselves, connect more with our community by making one small shift in thought and/or actions.

Congrats again on this vibrant artwork and it getting front-row centre exposure!

Perhaps I should mention that for several months I have been trying to find out more information online on the Durham Council for the Arts as a way to try and get information on how to get involved locally and to learn about the various events in Durham. My searches did not turn up anything. Does it still exist? If so, how about we create an online web presence for it to make it more visible and accessible to the community? And we could link to the page from here, and vice versa.

Definitely a great idea. Did anyone happen to record their talks at the event that happened this week? I'd love to watch it online if I could and was disappointed I had to miss the event.

What does it mean to be an Ambassador, and how does one get signed up? We should add this information to the Ambassadors tab above.

Does AOT have an action committees I can join?

Love your group's idea about holding ongoing gatherings for the creative community and broadcasting via internet. This opens the door to so many more people who would likely be interested, but are unable to come. The more heads, the more light bulbs.

Arts and Culture was one of the three topics. A real eye opener for me and many by the sounds of it. What program did you graduate from? What type of work would you like to do? Perhaps add a link to your portfolio in the comments so people reading this blog can understand your needs and perhaps help.

I wonder, were there any ideas on job creation for young professionals in Durham in arts and culture? I am a relatively new post-graduate and would love to work and use my skill set in the region (where I am currently living) rather than commute into Toronto but I find limited opportunity.

Hats off to The Regional Municipality of Durham, for putting on another successful Art of Transition event, and for all the other people who participated and made it the AWESOME day it was. Many of the ideas discussed today will change Durham Region in a positive way, I believe we made a huge difference, and I for one am pumped!

Thanks for sharing Kerri. The quote...

“Over the next generation the demand for transit-served development sites will far outstrip the supply” -- Douglas Farr, Sustainable Urbanism."

is pretty scary one given the trending raise in oil prices! Sustainable Urbanism eh?

I would love to see this site where artists could post an add for corporations to view. My daughter sings at charities and corporate events but they are far and few between as we have to seek out events and submit letters. Usually we are too late or the event company has a selected few. Eventhough a person can search the WEB to find an artist, it can be tedious as they still have search and then browse each individual websites to see what the artist has to offer. That is perhaps why planners tend to use their selected few. It would be nice if Durham artsists could apply to a Tourist website whereby Corporations or Ambassadors could view several recommended local artists to book for events.

Using innovation within an organizational environment has been a focus of mine for a few years now. At the Durham Colllege Corporate Training Department we are exploring how to support organizations in the Region to be more innovative and creative. We would very much like to be part of the dialogue to better understand what we can do to help!

AOT confirmed that we need to create an environment, a "Community", almost a Place To Be that will foster creativity and collaboration. A place that will inspire and expedite economic growth for our region. It will be this place that attracts industry, which inturn will create job growth and economic prosperity.

the art of trasition confirmed for me what i have always believed and why i volunteer as volunteers are the backbone of every community.
just to give a bit of infoOshawa has a cancer unit in the hospital also Hearth Place for family friends and patients to talk about what they are going through a healing garden was needed Oshawa Garden Club volunteers and many supporters planted a garden I was able to have donated all the stepping stones by a company volunteersbring communities together
My suggestion would be set-up a Durham Region stategic committee so that action takes place complmenting all communities.
i am District 17 Director of Ontario Horticultural Association of which 12 societies are in Durham Region and we join together through out Durham enhance
our communities and we do an excellant job
We can have a transition for all of Durham Region

Defining the Creative in Durham and giving it a unique identity within the larger GTA. Developing a strategy to promote and develop Durham 's creative environment/economy/class not only in economic terms but also lifestyle and community building aspects. Acknowledging that the creative component (which is considerable) has value on so many levels in our community beyond the balance sheet and should be nurtured. Developing creative supportive partnerships.

I think that creativity and atmospheres that encourage it help to solve problems vicariously by the very act of being relaxed and creative. Often solutions and brainstorms come when you are engaged in those ways, rather than trying to push to make things happen. I also believe that engaging creativity in various aspect is an element that creates inclusiveness for all people within our community, not just those with knowledge and skills. Our communities are not just made up of business people and we need to be able to recognize and acknowledge all people within our communities and create places where they fit in also. Creativity and arts can be a bridge to make that happen.

I think we need to seriously consider how to become more locally self-sufficient. Start by teaching each other things like knitting, crocheting, even home cooking; how to grow vegetables in greenhouses, etc. Get people in different walks of life learning about each other: manufacturing, agriculture, finance, community services. Once we get the conversation going, we can figure out how to work together to preserve the Durham Region that we want to preserve and work towards improving our self-sufficiency as a Region.

Far too many concessions are being made to developers who bring major population densities with no regard to the food basket . We already import too great a % of these necessities to build on sustainabilty. Firstly. each and every country should be working on self-sufficiency in maintaining the necessities of life and, secondly, every country blessed with a capacity to do more should be giving to those who can't rather than supporting imports from companies who do little or nothing towards the self-sufficiency and well-being of their own populaces.

In my opinion, far too many concessions are being made to developers who bring major population densities with no regard to the food basket. We already have to import a major portion of edible fare. Much more attention needs to be given to agricultural endeavors.

We have become an urban society with tremendous growth in our major high density centers at the expense of our rural, remote, Aboriginal and near-urban communities. These smaller municipalities are quickly becoming isolated islands in an every expanding digital world. There now exists a serious urban – non-urban divide and many of our rural communities are now struggling just to survive. We urgently need to find a way to connect the city to the country and the country to the city.

TecVana is a new initiative specifically designed to reach the Net Geners, the new age consumer representing 37% of our population today and encouraged them to network, socialize, engage and collaborate directly with participating rural and northern communities to develop a solution whereby they drive the value creation process from beginning to end!

TecVana modeling suggests that it is possible to drive $2.0 Billion annually into the Ontario economy from fishing alone, over $19.5 Billion annually to Ontario from all outdoor activities ($40.0 Billion over 5 years). TecVana is the new age marketing stimulus!
TecVana is the art of transition. It involves innovation, unique communities, collaboration, economic transformation, creative industries, sustainable prosperity and positive change.

The City of Dryden Ontario will be the pilot location for TecVana. As stated by city council “we agree that the concept of TecVana has great potential for economic development opportunities in our area and strongly lead our support to this type of strategic and innovative thinking.” Near-urban communities also need to consider adopting this new model to local economic growth.

With the strength of UOIT, and a growing trend for corporate migration from the 416 to the 905 regions, an opportunity exists for Durham region to emulate the tremendous success of Kitchener-Waterloo and Cambridge's high tech growth rates. There are lessons for the municipalities to learn, and pitfalls to avoid however, and clearly the climate must be conducive to enable new business in Durham Region!

I would invest even more in a great public transportation service with high speed links to Toronto and the airport. I would stop all ribbon development which makes our towns merge into each other and takes away any community feeling. I would look to the future and learn lessons from the past by utilizing the existing facilities we have here and using them for new, smarter, greener techologies. I would offer incentives to business owners to hire local employees, incentives to people to buy locally produced products and oh, so much more.......

The "art of transition" means transitioning to a state of being comfortable with the idea of sustainability as opposed to retaining notions and ideals of unnecessary growth. On a local level, Durham Region has rich agricultural lands that deserve protection and preservation. Where development and industry is deemed absolutely necessary, there are far better lands available to that purpose, rather than pavement suffocating our most fertile resources. Conservation is as important and vital to growth as it is to sustainability.

I would encourage Durham residents to open their hearts and ears to some of the great musicians in our own region. Bands and ensembles of many genres play live all around Durham, but are not supported enough and venues are even closing down because people do not come out to hear their local performers. Let's turn off the American cable channels, become active fans of more Durham artists, and head out to appreciate more home-grown talent!
